2010 Bird Count on Grand Bahama sights more than 100 species

Yellow-billed Cuckoos are now nesting on Grand Bahama. The species was observed at Garden of the Groves during this year's count.

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- The 10th annual Christmas Bird Count for the year 2010 was held this past Wednesday, January 5th, 2011. The Grand Bahama birding community enthusiastically participated in the count and joined visiting birding experts to form five teams that observed, identified and recorded species from sunrise to sunset.

The count was fortunate to have Bruce Hallet from Atlanta participate. Bruce recently published the most comprehensive photographic birding fieldguide for the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. A twenty-five year interest and preoccupation with birds has taken him to some of the more remote regions of the world. For the past several years, he has concentrated his travels to the islands of The Bahamas. He is currently a member of the firsr Bahamas Avian Records Committee.

One of the rare species of the 2010 count was a Ruddy Duck on the Ruby Golf Course

Dr. Elwood "Woody" Bracy, a retired medical doctor who makes his home in Treasure Cay, Abaco, was also one of the team leaders. Woody is considered the foremost authority on sea and shorebirds in the Abacos and he enjoys watching birds from his boat together with his wife Betsy. His expertise and enthusiasm is always appreciated when he joins Grand Bahama's Christmas Bird Count. Dr. Bracy is the compiler and organizer of the annual Abaco Christmas Birdcount.

The graceful and delicate Black-necked Stilt was observed on the Emerald pond.

Everybody welcomed back Anthony White from Bethesda, Maryland. Tony is a retired Naval officer and has studied birds in the Bahamas for over 30 years. He brought birding into the local comunities by introducing Christmas Bird Counts throughout the Bahamas over ten years ago. He is the author of the "Birder's Guide of the Bahama Islands" and a member of the American Birding Association's Board of Directors. Tony compiled 10 ABA regional checklists for North America and one for the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos. He has advised the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism on matters concerning birds, birding and conservation. His Bahama list records over 220 species.
It was one of the best days in the history of Grand Bahama's bird counts. The weather was a balmy 75 degrees with winds around 10 mph - prerequisites for perfect birding. Five teams with over 30 birders went into the designated areas from dawn to dusk. When the recorded species were read out loud by each team during the "tally rally" at Garden of the Groves that evening more than 100 species had been seen. The exact number of species will be determined within a couple of days when additional species are added that are observed within the count week.

Bruce Purdy, a former resident of Grand Bahama, came back from his new home in Destin, Florida, to be the official compiler for the count. Bruce has made a tremendeous contribution to birding on Grand Bahama while residing here. He birded many times a week and frequently guided young Bahamians into the field to introduce them into the fascinating world of birds. During his outings he would patiently seek and photograph birds never recorded here. Bruce would report them to the American Birding Association and thereby increase the species account for the island. His expertise and enthusiasm will be missed but his return to this year's count was appreciated by all.

Erika Gates, who has organized the Grand Bahama Christmas Bird Count over the years, was delighted about its outcome and commented: "I am happy that we were able to observe and record such a large number of species. The count will make a significant contribution to environmental assessment and future conservation. When our observations are entered into the largest database in ornithology, declines and increases in bird populations will be determined. These findings can then indicate environmental degradation of bird habitats through pollution, deforestation or development that will affect human quality of life as well."

Christmas Birds Counts are conducted on one day during a four week period in December/January throughout North America, Central America, The Caribbean and South America with over 60.000 persons participating. In the Bahamas counts take place on New Providence, Grand Bahama and Abaco.

Awards Presentation of the Labyrinth & Garden of the Groves 2nd Annual Junior Photographic Competition

Freeport, Bahamas - It was good to see most of the entrants together with members of their families and other supporters at the charming little prize giving ceremony on the Labyrinth on Friday 23rd April, also Shakespeare's birthday!

Our young photographers once again presented the judges with difficult choices in selecting this year's winners. Consideration was given to all aspects of art, design, form, structure, lighting and presentation; in addition to other criteria and this year included an appropriate Shakespearean quotation to suit each entry. Some quotations were exceptionally well chosen and prompted the judges to make an additional award for exceptionally appropriate quotations. Sadly, we did not have any entries in the Primary category. Perhaps, the quotation requirement was off putting to the little ones.

Rico Thompson (a member of Lucaya Youth Theatre Society ) recited 'To be, or not to be' and Bill Nelson, also representing the LYTS gave a short talk on 'the man' himself, Shakespeare, whose birthday anniversary we honoured this year by including the Shakespearean quotation with each photographic entry.

Darren Rollins and Alvin Smith took care of the set-up and sounds, which accompanied the early evening birdsong we so enjoy in the lovely Garden of the Groves; and Erika Gates captured the joy of the occasion, in her lovely photographs attached to this article. (I am sure the contestants are happy she is slightly over the age required to compete with them!)

Barbara Chester welcomed everyone, congratulated the contestants and introduced Lyndah Wells, one of Freeport's popular professional photographers, and chairman of our panel of judges. Lyndah spoke informatively on photography in general and the contestants' work in particular. She graciously presented the medals and awards in conjunction with Rico, who eloquently pronounced each quotation accompanying the photo.

2nd Annual Garden of The Groves Photographic contest- Winners ceremony

By Barbara Chester
Freeport, Bahamas- Our young photographers have, once again, presented the judges with difficult choices to make. They considered all aspects of photographic expertise in the well presented pictures taken in the Garden of the Groves. The Shakespearean quotations were appropriate, as required; some were exceptionally well chosen.

It is hoped that many, if not all the entrants will be present at the Prizegiving on the Labyrinth at 6.00p.m. on Friday 23rd April; Shakespeare's birthday! We hope to thank and congratulate them all.
Lyndah Wells, one of Freeport's leading professional photographers and chairman of our panel of judges, has graciously consented, again this year, to present the medals and awards.
The winning photographs will be put on display.

Peace on the Path !

Garden of the Groves "Art inspired by Nature" Workshop - Public Show on Sunday

Freeport, Grand Bahama - Over the past five Saturdays art students were inspired by the beautiful scenery at Garden of the Groves while their instructor, Angelika Siska, lectured and advised them how to use their paint brushes with acrylics on canvas to create their own master pieces in nature.

Angelika is a long-time resident of Grand Bahama and a well known artist in Germany and the United States where she has exhibited in art shows. Titles of her recent exhibitions in Germany and Kentucky have been "Butterflies, Blossoms and Landscapes" and local art students are very fortunate to be given the opportunity to share in Angelika's expertise. This is the second year that Angelika has given of her time and talent to conduct an art workshop at the Garden for art and nature enthusiasts.

There will be a public showing of the results of this workshop on Sunday, March 21st, at 5:00pm, in the chapel at the Garden of the Groves.

Florida Panther Cheerleaders photo shoot at the Garden of the Groves

Cameraman, lighting engineer, production supervisor put the shot together to show off the beautiful setting at the Garden of the Groves Photo: Erika Gates

Grand Bahama Island - The "Icedancers" are returning to the Garden of the Groves this weekend for another photo shoot. The Garden had been the setting for photos for the Florida Panthers Ice Hockey Team's annual calender last year. The calender is sold during the Panther's home games at Bank America Arena and represents a wonderful tool for the promotion of Grand Bahama Island.

Garden of the Groves is becoming a popular choice for photo shoots internationally as well as locally. Recently the Garden and Grand Bahama Island received worldwide exposure while Miss Universe and eighty four contestants of the pageant were photographed by local and international press with the lush vegetation and water features serving as a fitting backdrop for such an event.
Popular local musician Willie Love is using the Garden as a backdrop for a musical video "Welcome to Grand Bahama" Photo: Erika Gates

Not only international photo shoots take place at the Garden but local promoters and artists make use of this tropical paradise to enhance their products. Singer and song writer, Willie Love, recently shot a promotional music video for the release of his latest CD "Welcome to Grand Bahama". In his mellow voice Willy sings......................" Garden of the Groves is a place you should go!"

And what a perfect setting the deck along the ponds and waterfalls provided for Miss Grand Bahama when she received her crown and was given the opportunity to conduct her first press conference there a couple of weeks ago!

Of course, any time there is a wedding at the Garden, hundreds of pictures are taken at numerous sites on the property that day. However, earlier this year we realized how much a wedding picture at the Garden meant to a newlywed couple from New York City. Their wedding ceremony had taken place in Nassau. The next morning they flew with their photographer to Freeport, got into a taxi that took them to the Garden and spent the morning posing for picture memories all around the Garden. They returned to Nassau that afternoon!

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism's Film Commission Department has registered the Garden of the Groves as a site for of international film productions. We are keeping our fingers crossed that some day this tropical paradise on the Island of Grand Bahama may become the backdrop for a major motion picture!

ARTWORK BY ANTONIUS ROBERTS
ENTRANCE TO GARDEN OF THE GROVES

FREEPORT, GRAND BAHAMA, SEPT 17, 2009 – The world-famous Garden of the Groves in Grand Bahama has launched an all-new web site to help keep local residents and visitors up-to-date on the activities and services at the popular island destination.

The new web site features a detailed event calendar, news about the Garden, and a beautifully finished illustrated map of the expansive 12-acre natural sanctuary, which can be viewed online or downloaded as a high-resolution PDF document.

The web site is located at: http://www.TheGardenOfTheGroves.com

A FUN DAY OUT
THE RECENLY BUILT CHAPEL

Dozens of photos help give someone considering a visit to the Garden a taste of what they can expect to experience there. And regular visitors can also enjoy reliving past events at the Garden through the photo galleries throughout the new web site.

Erika Gates of the Garden of the Groves said that the new web site is an important part of the operation. “We know that so many of our visitors to the island want to plan their time here so we’re sure our new web site will help them do that,” Mrs Gates said. “Local residents also want to know when we have special events going on, so our web site will make it easy for people to plan their next visit to the Garden of the Groves.” The Garden of the Groves was first dedicated 36 years ago to honour the contribution of Mrs and Mrs Wallace Groves, the original founders of the city of Freeport. The facility thrived for decades but was severely damaged in 2004 when Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne devastated many areas of the island and left the Garden in ruins.

A new team was formed to determine and execute a new plan for the Garden, and with the financial assistance from the Grand Bahama Port Authority for the restoration the grand re-opening took place on October 30th 2008. The Garden of the Groves now includes new features such as The Garden Café, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day on a large wooden deck among the trees. New Garden Shoppes, housed in charming New England-style cottages featuring local crafts and products, are now in full operation, as is the Grand Bahama Labyrinth, and a newly expanded children’s playground area. The historic chapel has also been restored and air-conditioned, making it a beautiful site for local and destination weddings, renewal of vows, baptisms and memorial services.

Since reopening, the Garden of the Groves has been certified by the U.S. Wildlife Federation as a Wildlife Habitat, a testament to its vital role in providing a place for local wildlife to thrive.Other features on the new Garden of the Groves web site include more than a dozen ‘frequently asked questions’ and answers, details about becoming a member of the Garden, and contact information. The web site was designed and is hosted by local media and marketing company Keen i Media Ltd, and is located at www.TheGardenOfTheGroves.com.
