GBPA Awards top achievers at local graduations

Ginger Moxey GBPA Vice President

The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) continues its tradition of awarding scholarships to the top Bahamian graduating student at each of the island's high schools.

Commencement exercises for the Class of 2010 of the Lucaya International School (LIS) were held recently at the Grand Bahama Yacht Club.

Among the 16 graduates was co-head boy, Revanno Smith, who received a scholarship donation from GBPA as the top Bahamian achiever at LIS. Making the presentation on behalf of GBPA was Director of Community Relations, Geneva Ruther-ford, who congratulated Smith on his outstanding achievement.

Highly regarded as an exemplary, well-rounded student, in addition to receiving the GBPA scholarship, Smith also received the Headmas-ter's, English, Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Action & Service awards during the LIS graduation exercise.

"This is what makes Revanno special. He's a very bright student but he's so much more than that," said LIS headmaster, Chris Mockrish. "Revanno has an unbelievably good nature and is always willing to help fellow classmates and younger students... Especially with regards to his community service involvement, he doesn't participate because he has to, but because he wants to give back. In fact, Revanno does well above and beyond what is expected," Mockrish added.

With a cumulative 3.66 GPA, Revanno intends to matriculate to one of two highly-regarded institutions in Canada, either Dalhousie or Trent University and pursue studies in Business Management.

Another top achiever was Eight Mile Rock High School (EMR) head girl, Cardia Rolle, who garnered 18 awards during official graduation ceremonies held in her school's gymnasium on Wednesday morning. She too received a GBPA scholarship donation in recognition of her achievements.

Mrs. Moxey also had the privilege of presenting the talented EMR senior with her GBPA award and interestingly noted that even though Cardia had been recruited by LIS to join their student body, she chose to complete her high school education in Blue Jay territory.

EMR Vice Principal, Albert Jones, lauded Cardia as an example to follow as she repeatedly approached the podium to accept Most Outstanding Awards in a host of subjects.

With plans to pursue further educational studies at The College of The Bahamas, the EMR valedictorian and GBPA scholarship recipient credited her mother as being the motivational force behind her successes.

Under the theme, 'One Step at a Time', 35 students also graduated from Grand Baha-ma Catholic High School (GBCHS) on Wednesday. With much pomp and pa-geantry, the white-robed participants filed into Salons I and II of the Our Lucaya Resort, carrying lit candles that illuminated the darkened hall.

With a crowd of proud onlookers gathered for the occasion, salutatorian Alec Nabb walked away with top honours as the 2010 GBPA scholarship recipient from his school. GBPA-Vice President, Ginger Moxey, attended the exercise and made the special presentation to student-athlete Alec.

Vice Principal, CBGHS, Paula Bevans-Hanna described him as "a well-mannered and humble student, respected by teachers and peers....He is service-oriented at school, church and in the community."

With a cumulative 3.896 GPA, Alec will further his studies in the fall at Georgia Tech University in Atlanta, Georgia, as he aspires to become a doctor.

Under GBPA's 'Making it Happen' initiative, launched last year, GBPA is committed to awarding scholarship donations to the top Baham-ian graduating student in each high school on Grand Bahama who meets their scholarship criteria.

These three recent graduates now join an elite group of top graduating local achievers who've received GBPA scholarship donations. In 2009, 12 top Grand Bahamian students received similar awards and are now pursuing diverse degrees.
